Excerpt from The Seven-Day Resurrection

Mom sat in her chair, looking around. “Len, is this my house?”

“Yes.”

“Why can’t I remember?”

“What do you remember, Mom? Where did you come from just now?”

She stared blankly at the pie, as though wondering what to do with it. “What time does Wheel of Fortune come on?”

“Late this afternoon, I think.” Len hadn’t watched a game show since her death and hoped he’d never have to again.

A voice murmured from down the hall. Probably the clock radio. He ignored it and perched on the sofa’s armrest. “This is so good!” she exclaimed, tasting the pie. “Did you make it?”

“No, it’s one of those frozen things.” In her last few weeks, Mom was too blind and weak to feed herself. They had to spoon-feed her like a baby. Sometimes she would sip a nutrient drink, but Len could see that it gave her no pleasure.

Fleetingly, he wondered where the pie had come from. He didn’t remember buying it.

A smile crossed her face. “Len, do you remember that song about the two little clouds? My mother used to sing that to me when I got scared of the thunder.”

“You sang it to me, too,” he said. “When I was little.”

My thoughts on The Seven-Day Resurrection

The Seven-Day Resurrection is an intriguing, compelling story.

My mother passed away several years ago, yet she pops up in my dreams frequently. What would I do, if like Len, she showed up one morning in my living room quite alive, but a bit confused. It’s quite an interesting thought.

Len concerns himself with the mundane facts of this new reality, how to have her declared “undead”, will her Medicare kick back in to cover any expenses, how can he possibly go back to being her caregiver?

But, while dealing with the emotional baggage that the family left unresolved, Len gains a clearer understanding of his mother’s life. Perhaps she wasn’t the unloving, cold, nag her children thought her to be. Are there secrets that will shed a light on what formed the bones of this family? Of course there are. That’s what makes this story such a compelling read.

If you want an adventurous tale of zombies coming back to life, look elsewhere. This deeply moving tale hums quietly along while offering insight into the psyche of caregivers and family dynamics. It touches on themes of an unsatisfying life, unachieved dreams, and hope. There is always hope.

Through excerpts from the protagonist’s unfinished novel, we learn what he hoped and dreamed for in his own family. The “novel in a novel” added a lot of depth and understanding to my thoughts about Len and his family.

The book has Christian overtones without preaching at you. It’s a dynamic study of the effects of war on individuals and families. Sacrifices made during a war sometimes have lasting, haunting repercussions.

Oddly enough, there are bits of humor sprinkled throughout the story. The pace is steady and the characters well-written. I had a hard time putting the book down. It’s immensely readable and captured my imagination from the opening pages. Was I reaching the right conclusion in where the story was leading or was I entirely off-base? The ending was not a huge shock, but it confirmed my thoughts and wrapped up any mystery left over from the telling.

I am finding it difficult to put my thoughts to paper on this fascinating book from Chevron Ross. Let’s just leave it that I highly recommend you read a copy for yourself. I think every person will take away something different from their reading. It’s the type of book that leaves you thinking about it for days after you read the last page.

Congrats Mr. Ross on a well-written tale.
