Outside the cave, ground troops were being deployed, the sound of their combat boots stomping on the moon’s surface echoing. And inside the cave, eleven of the smartest and most dangerous women in the universe were staring daggers straight into my eyes.

“I knew we couldn’t trust a whippersnapper,” Athena York said.

“How very disappointing,” Beatriz Nunez snarled.

“I have a granddaughter in the Sunrisers,” Lilith hummed. “If you tipped her off, I’ll at least respect you for going for the heart.”

I shook my head and swung my arms around, sweating from every pore. “I swear I didn’t call them. This is all just a big misunderstanding. You have my complete loyalty.”

Madame N’gwa cocked her head to the side and grinned. “You wanted to be a Sunriser when you were even more of a baby than you are now. Perhaps you made a deal to make your dream finally come true.”

A shocking pain surrounded my heart. Those Sunriser bastards had stolen all the trust I’d earned from my idols through years of deceit. Whichever captain was in charge of this operation was going to pay.

Lioness stepped forward, crushing her glass in her hand and sending small shards flying all over the place. “Thank you for sharing your story with me. But I don’t think we’ll be hearing anymore of them. Rather, I don’t think you’ll be living any more of them.”

About Robyn Singer

Robyn Singer is a lifelong New Yorker, and since she was a kid playing with her action figures, all she’s wanted to do is tell stories. She went to SUNY Purchase to get a degree in Playwriting & Screenwriting with a minor in Film and has produced several comic books, but she’s always had her eye on becoming a published novelist.

As an Autistic, bisexual trans woman, diversity and inclusion in stories are vitally important to her, and she seeks to represent as many groups as possible in her work. While she wants to show characters of marginalized groups experiencing joy, she also draws inspiration from real-world problems which bother her.

Everyone loves a hero! Tell us all about this genuine character and the inspiration behind their development.

The central protagonist of The Sunrisers is Yael Pavnick, and while she may not be what most people would think of as a hero, she’s everything I would have wanted in a hero as a kid.

Yael Pavnick is a Jewish, Autistic, lesbian, all traits she shares with me. She’s also genetically engineered to be super strong, trained to mastery in a personalized combat style which mixes krav maga with professional wrestling, an off the charts genius, and she’s one of the best thieves to ever live, and one of I cannot in good conscience say that I share any of these traits with her.

Inspired by characters such as Cassandra Cain-Wayne from the Batman mythos, Doctor Aphra from Star Wars, and The Doctor from Doctor Who, Yael is energetic, unpredictable, and largely amoral though she tries to avoid killing, and unpredictable. She’s virtually unmatched in terms of both brains and brawn, but because of her Autism and ADHD, she struggles socially, both in casual situations and life threatening confrontations. When it came to writing her disabilities, I very much depicted hers in the same ways my own manifest for the most part.

As a child, Yael longed for nothing more than to join The Sunrisers, the universe’s premiere group of peacekeepers, alongside her best friend, Molina Langstone. The two were inseparable, but when the time came for applying to the Sunriser academy, only Molina was accepted. This was in spite of the fact that not only were Yael’s grades higher than Molina’s, but anyone’s. Rather, she was rejected for her disabilities. For not being “mentally fit.”

Yael took this hard, but ended up finding a new path. If the way of order wouldn’t accept her, then she’d embrace chaos. She got a ship and an engineer, and started putting all of her Sunriser training to use as the universe’s newest thief. To her, being a thief means freedom from the rules and establishment she grew up around, above all else.

It wouldn’t feel right talking about Yael in this capacity without mentioning some of her specific eccentricities. She’s a big eater, with a specific passion for soup and noodles, to the point she keeps a ranked list in her head of every soup she’s ever eaten.

This is far from the only list like this she keeps in her noggin. Her special interest is in professional wrestling, she can effortlessly recite the details of all her favorite storylines, and she was so inspired by the stories she loved that she chose to integrate wrestling moves into her previously more traditional fighting styles, practicality be damned. She lacks any form of manners, she’s scatterbrained and easily distracted, and she can’t help but flap her hands hard when she gets excited.

As said at the start, Yael is everything I would have wanted in a hero as a kid. She represents me perfectly, while still being beyond me and inspirational in many ways, she breaks the rules and makes her own, she finds a family that loves and supports her, and in the end, she gets the girl.
