Shadows of the Missing by Lauren Carr Book Review: A More Personal Chris Matheson Case
A deeply personal case that brings past and present together in one of the most layered investigations in the series.
If you've been following the Chris Matheson Cold Case Mysteries, you already know this series thrives on layered investigations and a strong ensemble cast. In Shadows of the Missing by Lauren Carr, that formula shifts slightly-bringing a more personal case to the forefront.
If you're new to the series, I recently shared my thoughts on the Chris Matheson Cold Case Mysteries box set audiobook, which is a great place to start before diving into this latest installment.

In the shadows of the missing, the truth lies buried.
Helen Clarke-Matheson believed she had escaped the shadows of her past, building a new life with Chris. But the past has a way of resurfacing, and when her sister arrives with a DNA test, Helen’s world is once again turned upside down. Her sister shattered the family history Helen believed to be true. Her young father hadn’t abandoned his family, and her delusional mother didn’t wander away from her children.
Chris Matheson and the Geezer Squad, a quirky team of retired seasoned sleuths working under the guise of a book club, are drawn into a deeply personal investigation. They must wade through decades of buried secrets and conflicting accounts to uncover the truth behind the parents’ disappearances.
As they peel back the layers of deception to unravel long-forgotten clues, they confront the lingering specter of murder and long-hidden crimes. Can they piece together the fragments of the past to bring closure to Helen and her siblings, or will the truth remain buried forever?

Review at a Glance
| Genre: | Mystery |
| Series: | Chris Matheson Cold Case Mysteries, Book 5 |
| Length: | 434 pages |
| Content Rating: | PG-13 |
| My Rating: | ★★★★★ |
Quick Take: A deeply personal cold case mystery where buried family secrets, emotional stakes, and the Geezer Squad's signature teamwork make this one of the strongest entries in the series.
Content Considerations: This is a PG-13 mystery. The story includes murder investigations and occasional on-page violence, though not overly graphic. Some mild language and closed-door romantic elements are present.
My Thoughts
Now let's take a closer look at how this story came together and what stood out most along the way.
This installment feels more personal than earlier books in the series, and that shift works in its favor. The mystery itself is still layered and engaging, but the emotional weight behind it gives the investigation a stronger sense of urgency. As Helen's past begins to unravel, the case becomes less about solving a puzzle and more about understanding the people at the center of it.
What continues to stand out in this series is the balance between character and plot. The Geezer Squad brings a sense of familiarity and steady momentum, while still allowing space for individual personalities to shine. Their dynamic adds moments of levity without ever undercutting the seriousness of the case.
The pacing leans more deliberate than fast-moving, but it suits the story. This is a mystery that unfolds in layers, with each revelation adding context rather than simply pushing toward the next twist. The result is a story that feels cohesive and thoughtful rather than rushed.
If there's one thing that sets this book apart, it's how seamlessly the emotional and investigative threads are woven together. The deeper the case goes, the more those elements begin to overlap, making the resolution feel earned and satisfying.
In Conclusion
Shadows of the Missing is a strong addition to the Chris Matheson Cold Case Mysteries, particularly for readers who enjoy character-driven stories with meaningful emotional depth.
While the series has always balanced mystery with personality, this installment leans further into the human side of the story-and that shift adds a layer of complexity that makes it stand out.
For longtime readers, this offers a more personal look at the characters and the kinds of cases that shape them. For those new to the series, it still works as a compelling entry point, especially if you enjoy mysteries where the relationships and history behind the case matter just as much as the outcome.
Overall, this is a thoughtful, well-paced mystery that delivers both intrigue and emotional payoff-making it one of the more memorable entries in the series.

Guest Post from Lauren Carr
I'm especially happy to welcome Lauren Carr to the blog today to share a behind-the-scenes look at what makes a mystery truly work. Her perspective on character and motivation adds a deeper layer to Shadows of the Missing.
The First Ingredient for a Murder Mystery: Dysfunctional Characters
When I wrote my very first murder mystery, my beta reader handed the manuscript back with a slightly bewildered look and said, "There are so many dysfunctional people in this book."
I smiled and replied, "If everyone was functional, you wouldn't have a murder."
She laughed, but I could tell she wasn't a regular mystery reader. She came from a world of literary fiction where characters sip tea and ponder life's quiet disappointments.
In my world, those quiet disappointments often lead to buried bodies, decades-old secrets, and one very determined group of sleuths determined to dig them up.
Dysfunctional characters aren't just a fun side effect of the genre-they're the secret sauce. They're the reason readers stay up past midnight turning pages. Because in a murder mystery, perfect people don't make compelling victims, suspects, or even investigators.
It's the flaws, the secrets, the messy family dynamics, and the unresolved baggage that create motive, opportunity, and that delicious layer of "who really had a reason to want them gone?"
In my Chris Matheson Cold Case Mysteries, dysfunctional characters drive every story.
Take my latest release, Shadows of the Missing. At the heart of the novel is Helen Clarke-Matheson, a woman who believed she had finally escaped the shadows of her painful childhood. She built a new life with Chris, put the past behind her-or so she thought.
Then a DNA test arrives courtesy of her sister, and everything Helen believed about her parents' disappearances crumbles.
The dysfunction isn't window dressing-it's the engine of the plot.
Family resentments that never healed. Secrets parents kept from their children. The way one generation's choices ripple through the next. These aren't caricatures; they're painfully human. And that humanity is what makes the cold case feel so personal and urgent.
Of course, the investigators bring their own flavors of dysfunction to the table-thank goodness.
Chris Matheson and the Geezer Squad are highly functional when it comes to solving crimes. But they're far from perfect in their personal lives. They carry scars from long careers, family complications, quirky habits, and the occasional stubborn streak.
That's what makes them relatable-and fun to write.
I've always believed that the best mysteries happen when ordinary (or extraordinarily flawed) people are pushed to their limits.
A functional, well-adjusted family with no secrets doesn't generate a cold case that lingers for decades. But a family built on half-truths and hidden crimes? That's pure mystery gold.
This is why I fell in love with the genre as a child listening to my mother read Perry Mason. Murder mysteries let us explore the darkest corners of human nature while still delivering justice, closure, and-often-hope.
So the next time someone tells you a mystery has "too many dysfunctional characters," you can smile and say, "Exactly. That's the point."
If you love cold case mysteries where the real puzzle is the human heart as much as the crime itself, I invite you to dive into Shadows of the Missing.
Happy sleuthing,
Lauren Carr
Lauren's perspective on character and motivation really comes through in this story-especially in how the emotional stakes and hidden histories shape the mystery.
