Some journeys are measured in miles. Others are measured in what we finally allow ourselves to face along the way.

Travel memoirs often promise adventure, but The Leopard and the Moon reaches for something far more personal. Nigel Roberts combines the physical challenge of trekking through Nepal's remote Dolpo region with an honest emotional reckoning shaped by grief, illness, and family tragedy.

Inspired in part by the earlier journeys documented in The Snow Leopard, this memoir becomes both a demanding travel narrative and a deeply reflective examination of memory, endurance, and healing.

Published by ImperfeCt Books on May 2026
Genres: Adult Non-Fiction 18+, Memoir / Travel Memoir
Formats: eBook, Paperback
Pages: 305

In September 2016, at the age of 65, Nigel Roberts embarked on a two month trek through Dolpo, one of the most remote regions in Nepal.

Following the route taken by Peter Matthiessen (The Snow Leopard) and George Schaller (Stones of Silence) over forty years before him, Nigel was driven by a wish to make sense of illness and tragedy in his family, and to better understand his part in those traumatic events.

A quest for clarity and candor, The Leopard and the Moon weaves together three different journeys: a demanding physical hike, an emotional reckoning, and Nepal's own trajectory across four tumultuous decades.

Why This Memoir Stands Out

While The Leopard and the Moon is often described as a travel memoir, the journey itself is only part of the story. What makes this book memorable is the way Nigel Roberts uses the physical challenge of trekking through Nepal's remote Dolpo region as a pathway into deeper questions about family, loss, resilience, and personal responsibility.

The writing is vivid and immersive, bringing both the landscape and the emotional weight of the memoir to life. Roberts does not present himself as a hero conquering a mountain trail. Instead, he approaches the journey with honesty, vulnerability, and a willingness to examine difficult moments from his past.

The result is less a traditional travel memoir and more a thoughtful meditation on healing, memory, and the stories we carry with us throughout our lives.

My Thoughts

Going into this book, I expected a travel memoir centered on a trek through one of Nepal's most remote regions. While that journey provides the framework for the story, what I found was something far more reflective and personal.

Nigel Roberts' writing is exceptionally strong. His vivid descriptions place readers alongside him on the trail, allowing the landscape, challenges, and quiet moments of reflection to feel immediate and real. Yet the physical journey is only one layer of the memoir.

At its heart, this is a book about confronting pain, examining the past, and making peace with difficult chapters of life. As someone close in age to the author, I found myself reflecting on the courage required to undertake a journey like this. It takes remarkable trust in oneself, emotional honesty, and determination to revisit painful memories while navigating such a demanding environment.

Readers looking for a fast-paced adventure story may be surprised by how introspective the memoir becomes. For me, however, that introspection is what gives the book its greatest strength. The trek through Dolpo serves as the backdrop for a much deeper exploration of grief, healing, and self-understanding.

In Conclusion

The Leopard and the Moon is ultimately about far more than a trek through Nepal. Through vivid writing and honest self-examination, Nigel Roberts transforms a demanding physical journey into a thoughtful exploration of grief, healing, memory, and personal growth.

Readers expecting a traditional adventure memoir may be surprised by how reflective the book becomes. Those willing to embrace that introspective journey, however, will find a deeply human story about resilience, self-understanding, and the courage required to confront the past.

Readers drawn to memoirs that explore healing, resilience, and personal reflection may also enjoy my review of Under a Whistling Sky.
