Love Across Time by Beth Ford | Historical Time Travel Romance Review
The most fascinating part wasn't the time travel-it was watching Ashley learn to survive in another century.
Many time-travel stories focus on the journey between centuries, but Love Across Time asks a different question: what happens after you arrive?
Ashley has chosen to leave the modern world behind to build a life with Thomas, a medieval knight, in fourteenth-century England. Between court intrigue, strict social expectations, and the uncertainty of changing history itself, life in the past proves far more complicated than simply getting there.
As I read, I found myself especially drawn to the details of medieval life and the question lingering beneath the story: what happens when people begin changing history, one seemingly small decision at a time? Beth Ford blends romance, historical detail, and political tension into a story that explores the challenges of building a future in a world that was never meant for you.

Ashley and Thomas, a medieval knight, are in 1377 England, escaping from present-day immigration authorities intent on capturing Thomas. Having fled to the past to ensure their togetherness, Ashley is faced with adapting to fourteenth-century life, while Thomas, new to his title as Baron after his older brother’s death, is called to Parliament, encountering enemies there and at court as he struggles to build his own alliances.
Ashley's work at a monastic hospital is deemed “miraculous” but draws unwanted attention as potential witchcraft. Meanwhile, becoming embroiled in a political movement, she realizes too late it’s a plot against the King.
How can Ashley conform to social expectations, counter the plot, and still keep her relationship with Thomas, in all the turmoil?
Be sure to check out the prequel, Love Between Times.

Content Considerations
Time travel may bring Ashley and Thomas together, but living in fourteenth-century England presents challenges neither of them can easily escape. Here's what worked for me as a reader.
My Thoughts
Although Love Across Time is marketed as a standalone novel, I found myself wishing I had read Love Between Times first. Beth Ford does an admirable job weaving in the details readers need from the earlier story, and I was never lost, but I suspect the emotional impact of Ashley and Thomas's journey would be even stronger when experienced in the order it was written.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the novel is watching Ashley navigate the social expectations of fourteenth-century England. Simple actions that would go unnoticed today-addressing or touching someone above her social station-can create awkward situations or even real problems. Those moments helped bring the historical setting to life and reminded me just how different daily life would have been for someone suddenly transported from the modern world.
I was also fascinated by Ashley's work at the monastery and the reactions to the medical knowledge she introduces. What seems like common sense to a modern reader can appear miraculous or suspicious in a medieval setting, creating both opportunities and dangers for her. These scenes added another layer of tension beyond the romance.
The story also continues to explore a question introduced in the first book. Ashley and Thomas know that a manuscript warned of serious consequences if the past or present were altered, yet they continue making changes that seem increasingly significant. That lingering uncertainty creates an intriguing thread running beneath the main plot, and I found myself wondering whether those warnings might eventually come due in a future installment.
Ford keeps the pacing steady throughout while populating the story with a mix of fictional characters and recognizable historical figures. The political maneuvering surrounding the young King Richard adds another dimension to the narrative and helps the world feel larger than Ashley and Thomas's personal story.
While I think reading the first book would likely have increased my enjoyment and emotional connection to the characters, I still found Love Across Time to be an engaging read. The blend of romance, history, and time-travel speculation kept me turning pages, and I would happily continue with the series-or even go back and read the first book when time permits.
In Conclusion
Love Across Time combines historical detail, political intrigue, and romance into an entertaining journey through fourteenth-century England. Readers who enjoy time-travel stories that focus on adapting to another era rather than simply visiting it will find plenty to appreciate here. While I recommend reading Love Between Times first for the fullest experience, this sequel stands well on its own and left me curious to see where Ashley and Thomas's story might lead next.
If you enjoy stories that blend romance, historical settings, and touches of the fantastical, you may also enjoy my review of Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle.
Read an Excerpt
If the combination of medieval intrigue, political danger, and time travel appeals to you, here's a glimpse inside Love Across Time:
The scene at Newgate was much different than when they had left only a couple of hours before. The crowd of everyday travelers had dispersed, and de Landys's men had been reinforced, though a few of them lay on the ground with arrows through their chests. Most of them stood with their backs to Ashley and her group, intent on countering the King's men, who were heaving against the gate to break it down.
The two knights who had agreed to accompany her paused. Ashley glanced up at de la Garde.
"This is your moment, Sir Matthew. Your future reputation will depend on what you choose to do now."
Sir Matthew set his mouth in a grim line. He glanced at his fellow, who nodded at him. They roared past her and attacked the men from behind, slashing swords into backs and necks.
Ashley used the distraction to dash into the gatehouse, where she paused only to slide the torch into a handy sconce on the wall. The King's men were still tied up. She would have to trust that their loyalty to the King held true. Ashley knelt and used her dagger to cut through the ropes, starting with de Mantel.
"What's the situation?" he asked as soon as he was free of his gag.
"The King's men are on the other side of the gate. We've reinforced them from inside."
"You? Are there any fighting men in your reinforcements?"
"Yes. Two." The bloody body of one of the traitors fell into the gatehouse doorway. Ashley forced a smile even though the sight made her gag. "See?"

I do enjoy a good time travel story.
Thank you for sharing! If anyone has any questions about the book, comment here, and I'll be stopping by again later today to answer them! Also, I'd be interested to hear how you all think you would do if you were dropped into the 14th century. I think I would do terribly because I have very few practical skills.
Thanks for stopping by, Beth. I thought about that several times while I was reading the book. I’m with you. While living on a farm, I had developed many practical skills, but I am quite sure my mouth would get me into trouble quite frequently.
Thank you for featuring LOVE ACROSS TIME.
