A Noble’s Path by I.L. Cruz is the second book in the Enchanted Isles series. It’s the continuing story of Inez Garza, dispossessed noble, magical contraband smuggler, secret dissident, and hidden mage. The Rachel Poli hosted blog tour for A Noble’s Path is stopping by my website today. I appreciate the opportunity to participate. You can find other stops on the blog tour at the bottom of this page.

Divided loyalties test Inez Garza.

The infamous incident at the Academy of Natural Studies has forced her to work for the King's Men while continuing to serve the hidden market.

Supporting Birthright furthers the cause of Magical Return, but the cost may be the fall of the royal house and losing Zavier forever.

And the strongest pull of all is her growing and erratic magic, which demands everything and offers only destruction in return.

Inez must decide where her loyalties lie—saving Canto or saving herself.

About I.L. Cruz

I.L. Cruz author photo

I.L. Cruz wants to live in a world where words are chosen with care, shoes are as comfy as socks, and reading time is sacred.

She's used her BA in international relations to sow political intrigue in her fantasy worlds and her MA in history to strive for the perfect prologue. When she's not engaged in this mad profession she indulges her wanderlust as often as possible, watches too much fanboy fare and reads until her eyes cross. She lives in Maryland with her husband, daughter and a sun-seeking supermutt named Dipper.

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write in this genre?

Fantasy lets you ask continual “what if” questions. You’re not constrained by the known. And because of magic. I always want to write about magic!

If an author fictionalized your life, in which genre would the story belong?

This is a tough question. I’d say magical realism. The mystical has always been a part of my life.

Do you have a set writing schedule?

It depends on what stage of writing I’m currently tackling. When I’m writing a first draft, I write every weekday morning for at least two hours, but it’s been known to go on for three. If I’m working on edits, then I stick to 90 minutes (or I start to go cross-eyed!). Afternoons are for marketing, blogging, etc. And I try never to write at night unless I’m coming up on a tight editing deadline. Nighttime just isn’t creative for me.

Do you need silence to write, or can you work in any environment?

I don’t need silence, but I can’t listen to music—too tempting to sing along. I stick to reruns of TV shows or movies I’ve seen more than five times if I want sound company.

What is your favorite type of music?

It’s easier to ask what I don’t like. No death metal or jazz that becomes too freeform. Otherwise, I can find at least a handful of songs in any genre that I like.

How do you choose the names of your characters?

I have name days. There’s a huge book of world baby names on my shelf and quite a few bookmarks on my computer dedicated to websites about names. Then for an entire day, I make lists of names I like (because of the sound, the meaning, and sometimes the way it looks on a page) and start naming my characters.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

So many things! My earliest memory was wanting to be one of the guys that backed up salsa singers. They wore matching outfits and danced while they sang the chorus. It looked like so much fun.

What is your most unusual writing quirk?

I don’t know if it’s a quirk, but I have to write out my first draft by hand. If I start on the computer, I tend to self-edit way too soon. Pen and paper are more forgiving somehow.

Do you have a hobby you would like to share with us?

I’m currently trying to teach myself calligraphy and hand lettering. I also collect obscure words.

What do you read for pleasure?

I read lots of speculative fiction and historical fiction. When I need a break from that, I pick up a mystery novel, usually cozy.

Do you have a favorite snack or beverage while you are writing?

Because I write in the mornings, I tend to reach for black tea, especially when I’m editing.

Is there anything you would like my readers to know about you and your book?

I started this series because I wanted to see myself, and my daughter reflected in a fantasy series. There aren’t a lot of Latina-led stories out there, especially Afro-Latina led.
