The Black Shuck’s forces gather just beyond the mist . . .

Captain Justice Kasric knows how complicated family can be. The escalating Human-Faerie war has scattered and wounded her siblings and transformed her parents beyond recognition. After narrowly escaping yet another dangerous clash, fifteen-year-old Justice has had enough. She’s determined to defeat the Black Shuck, the mysterious leader controlling the Faerie invasion of London, but if Justice hopes to stand a chance at victory, she’ll have to do the impossible: reunite her family and lead them against the looming Faerie Armada.

With her mother and brother at the helm of the enemy fleet, and the prophesized Seven Virtues slipping out of reach, Justice more than has her work cut out for her. Even if she can save England, the cost may be higher than she’s willing to pay.

About Christian Klaver

Christian Klaver Author Profile image

Christian Klaver has been writing for over twenty years, with a number of magazine publications, including Escape Pod, Dark Wisdom Anthology, and Anti-Matter.

He’s the author of The Supernatural Case Files of Sherlock Holmes series, but has written over a dozen novels, both fantasy and sci-fi, often with a Noir bent.

He's worked as book-seller, bartender, and a martial-arts instructor before settling into a career in internet security. He lives just outside the sprawling decay of Detroit, Michigan, with his wife, Kimberly, his daughter, Kathryn, and a group of animals he refers to as The Menagerie.

He’s also a part of the Untitled Writer’s Group based in Ann Arbor for the past decade or so with a bunch of equally starry-eyed dreamers and social misanthropes.

Q & A with Christian Klaver

Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?

In this series, Faith and Justice. Justice has so much of my daughter, Katie in her, and so much of me, that it was very easy to imagine her thoughts and actions. I wanted Faith to be a striking counterpoint to her younger sister, so I purposely wanted her to embrace some very different ideas and motivations, so none of those came naturally. I think Faith, as a living, breathing person in my head, fell into place last of everyone, after many, many drafts. Justice usually felt right on the first one.

What advice would you give budding writers?

Some kind of plan. Outline, summaries, shortlist, whatever, some kind of plan so that you’re not entirely winging it on the first draft. It’s too easy to get stuck in endless revisions when you don’t know where you’re going.

Same advice as the first point, really: finish the book. I know far too many authors, good writers, that get the first quarter of the book done in a wildfire and then get caught up in tinkering, fixing, planning, trying to get that 2nd quarter of the book right, where it’s so easy to get lost. Limit your tinker time. Finish the entire rough draft, then fix the hard things to fix.

Write every day.

If there is one thing you want readers to remember about you, what would it be?

I’m not certain I want the readers to even know who I am. That’s flattering and fine, but not my goal. I want them to remember the book. I want to excite or charm or fascinate someone with the story and that cool thing the character did. The author behind the book is almost incidental. I’ll remember Sherlock Holmes to the end of my days. I’ve never even met A.C. Doyle.

Is there a specific ritualistic thing you do during your writing time?

Just coffee. If I get stuck, I’ll read something inspiring or go for a walk, but just coffee at the start.

Any hobbies? or Name a quirky thing you like to do.

I’m a big fan of the martial arts and have taken quite a few different kinds in the past. I’m also a drummer in a band, which is superfun.
