My thoughts on Off Broadway

Off Broadway by William A Glass book cover image

Off-Broadway: A Marriage Drama is just that, a drama set in New York during the 1970s and 1980s. If you don’t care for marital drama, it’s a great story to read for the nostalgic references throughout. Seriously, when is the last time you saw a cigarette vending machine.

There are great musical nuggets mentioned that also epitomize the era from Bing Crosby to The Grateful Dead to country classics. I knew the words to every song mentioned. It’s definitely set in my era.

The characters are hard to describe, but every single one of them from major to minor evokes emotions of good and bad. I got a sort of Mad Men vibe only for product placement marketing.

Along the way, we get a behind-the-scenes look at a theater production, pinball games, and even the inside of a jail.

There are themes of dysfunctional family relationships and alcohol abuse, along with mentions of marijuana use and illegal activities including embezzlement.

This story truly has it all. It will be great for anyone who lived through this era or wants a peek into what it was like to survive the turmoil of the times.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

William A. Glass is a retired business executive now living in South Carolina with his wife, Bettina. She teaches high school German while Bill is the soccer coach at a small college. Their three sons, Alex, Robert, and Gordon have all graduated from college and moved away to pursue careers.

Now Bill and Bettina enjoy long walks with their dogs. When the weather permits, Bill commutes on his motorcycle. “It’s like taking a roller coaster to work!” he enthuses.

Guest Post from William Glass

I’m sitting on the front porch of my house in rural South Carolina, enjoying the summer weather. In the background, Bruce Springsteen’s latest album is playing. It’s a reminder of the vital role of music in my novel Off Broadway: A Marriage Drama.

The main character in Off Broadway, Dave Knight, always seems to have some music going. He and his wife, Cindy, play records when relaxing and one album in regular rotation is Frampton Comes Alive. It was a huge hit during the 70s and still sounds great today.

In my novel, when Dave is driving, he usually has a cassette playing. In one scene he relies on Jerry Garcia and associates, to make it through a tedious drive. Terrapin Station, a wonderful Grateful Dead album, was popular at that time.

However, Dave doesn’t just listen to Rock ‘n’ Roll. In one scene he gets on the nerves of a co-worker by playing a Waylon Jennings Cassette. In another, he drives with one hand while conducting a Mozart symphony with the other.

So where did Dave get his love of music? We get a clue to this in a scene where Dave stumbles into an Irish bar in New York City. It turns out that he knows the words to many Bing Crosby tunes on the jukebox including “MacNamara’s Band,” “The Same Old Shillelagh”, and “Roddy McCorley.” These songs are familiar to Dave because his father, often sang them while Dave was growing up.

If Off Broadway ever gets made into a movie, the songs mentioned in the novel would make a great soundtrack! In the meantime, readers can find them on YouTube. Make sure to crank up the volume!

  1. Sunnymay

I like learning about relationships and I met my husband in the 80’s. This looks like a fun historical read with characters who misbehave a lot.
