My thoughts on Rambee Boo’s Lake Vacation

Rambee Boo’s Lake Vacation is the first book I’ve had the pleasure of reading in the Rambee Boo series. It’s a well-written tale for younger children. In addition, the book is beautifully illustrated by Frances Rose Español. While the author’s words are always the most important factor, the illustrations make the story come to life.

In this tale, Rambee Boo and Rock go on an outdoor adventure with their parents. Hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, and even a scavenger hunt fill their days. Unfortunately, Rambee Boo keeps leaving his beloved sock behind, and it’s up to Mom to save the day.

The story gives parents lots of opportunities to discuss outdoor adventures with their young ones. The seek and find feature of the story should be quite fun for young readers, while the repetitive nature of certain phrases will lend itself to helping children identify repeating words.

Overall, this is a well-told story in the Rambee Boo series. I believe it’s perfectly suited to children in the 1 – 5 age range.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

An Interview with Reena Korde Pagnoni

1. What genre do you write in and why?

I write in a genre called realistic fiction. There aren’t too many picture books written in realistic fiction that depict realistic and relatable characters. Most characters you find these days are superheroes or have some superpower. The Rambee Boo Series characters are more realistic, making them easier for our readers to resonate with.

2. What made you write a book about a boy and his dog?

After we adopted Rambee Boo, I saw a sweet relationship form between my youngest son Rocky and Rambee Boo. As I searched for realistic fiction picture books to read to Rocky about other children and their pets, I realized there weren’t many books to choose from. So…I decided to write my own!

3. Where do you write?

I like to write early in the morning when the house is quiet, and I’m left with my thoughts. I usually write downstairs by the fireplace in a big wingback chair, or in my office. I jot down lots of ideas on scrap paper, so I enjoy a quiet place to gather my thoughts (and paper scraps) to put them together.

4. What is your writing schedule?

I don’t write every day. In fact, I usually go through phases where I’ll write a few books in a 2-3 month span, and then I won’t write again for a few months. I’ll use that time that I’m not writing to move my books through the publishing process and to market them.

5. What do you like best about self-publishing?

I love publishing my own books because I get to wear my creative hat throughout the entire process. Once I’m done with the writing process, I get to be the creative director and oversee all parts of the publishing process from editing, illustrations, formatting, and printing.
