Review: Myth Agent by LA MacFadden is fantastic time-travel, and historical fiction rolled into one glorious story. Is it 1945 or 1910? Can it possibly be both? The author takes us on an incredible journey through time.

Synopsis:

It’s 1945, soon after VJ Day. Odessa Shatto, an antique dealer, is pierced in the side by a prehistoric bone. The next morning she awakens, horrified to see a hideous green slime creeping over her, hardening into a cocoon that quickly entombs her in darkness and leaves her fearing for her life. Each time it happens, she remembers feeling a sense of being thrown hard, as though from the hand of a giant. And the last time, she remembers her trajectory crossing with that of her fiancé, an injured soldier in the Pacific in World War Two. They may think of their paths crossing as a gift, but in reality, it will produce agonizing results.

Ruttledge Rosenbaugh, a professor of science devoted to his students at Hensley University, has spent years learning from his mentor, whose mantra was that time travelers are constantly around and unnoticed. But nothing Ruttledge has ever heard or read on time travel prepares him for what he witnesses in his secret laboratory in 1910. After recuperating from the ordeal, he spends years trying to prove the existence of time travel, while a jealous rogue from his past lies in wait, hoping to debunk any time travel theory the professor develops–no matter the cost.

Myth Agent is a time travel tale, woven of the fantastic, and interspersed with traces of historical fiction.

My Review: Myth Agent by LA MacFadden

Myth Agent is a well-written science fiction winner. The storyline remains coherent as the past, present, and future lives of the characters move through time. It is no easy feat for an author to accomplish. I promptly became invested in each character and their individual stories.

I like the mystery of time travel. It doesn’t seem like it should be as simple as flicking a switch. MacFadden conveys the torturous and violent feel of being thrown from one time to another. From a claustrophobic’s point of view, it would be a nightmare to be subjected to this form of travel.

The details of each period in time attest to the research the author put into making the story the best it could be. For a science fiction book, Myth Agent is remarkably believable. I hope a sequel is in the works. I’m not ready for the story to end.

I highly recommend Myth Agent to all lovers of the time-travel genre as well as general fiction. Don’t let the simple, black and white cover fool you; Myth Agent is a vibrant story. Seriously, watch the book trailer! (Link at bottom of the page.)

Meet L. A. MacFadden

Review: Myth Agent by LA MacFadden Author headshot

L.A. MacFadden was born in Oregon in 1956 to parents who were fond of the great outdoors and instilled that appreciation in their five children. Her father was employed by the Boy Scouts of America in Oregon, Washington, and Montana, so she spent all of her youthful summers in Boy Scout camps her father directed. But because the programs, of course, weren’t for girls, she and her three sisters spent a good deal of time reading books borrowed from the libraries of nearby towns. Those wonderful days of reading all those books-whether in the library, under the shady branches of trees, or in a tiny cabin, were responsible for her love of books, and no doubt led to her desire to become an author.

In 1975 she married her high school sweetheart, then a member of the United States Marine Corps. Later, they settled in western Oregon, near the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, where they enjoy spending time with their two grown children, grandchildren, and a host of extended family. L.A. MacFadden can often be found at home, working on her next book!

A short interview with L.A. MacFadden

1. How long have you been writing?

My third-grade teacher loved a story I wrote about a family of chalk sticks whose kingdom was the mighty blackboard. She read it to the class. I was so pleased to have entertained people with my story, and I am still trying to do that.

2. How do you choose your character names?

I research names and try to come up with something that fits the character.

3.what inspired you to write in this genre?

In the 1970s, Jack Finney’s book, Time and Again, was published. It’s a wonderful time-travel book, and I’ve wanted to write a time-travel book ever since.

4. If an author fictionalized your life, in what genre would the story belong?

Beginning in my teen years, I hope it would be a romantic comedy!

5. Do you need silence to write, and what is your favorite beverage while writing?

Yes, I do need silence, so if my husband is home doing a DIY project, I will go make banana bread or something because I need peace in the house to write. I am amazed anyone can sit in a coffee shop with conversation and other noises around and still concentrate on writing! Just give me my Starbucks (just black, please) to go—I’ll put it on my desk and sip it between sentences!

6. What is your most unusual writing quirk?

I guess it’s quirky that when something I was struggling to figure out is suddenly made known to me, I have one or two huge sneezes! My old dog, who is always sleeping in his bed by my desk, does not appreciate me waking him this way!

7. If you could form the ultimate writers’ group, who would you invite to join you?

I would have a former teacher, author Craig Lesley, and another, Lisa Dale Norton, lead the group. We’d have Fannie Flagg, Katherine Dunn, Jean Auel. John Steinbeck, Jules Verne, Kristin Higgins, Adriana Trigiani, and Maya Angelou. That’s for starters.

8. What three words best describe you?

Loyal, protective, funny. (Part of that is because I’m a Leo, but my very funny mother also rubbed off on me.)

9. What would you like readers to know about you and your book?

It took about four years of research and writing for Myth Agent to become a story of time travel and historical fiction. I hope that it was time well spent so that readers will get a feeling that even people leading ordinary lives can have spectacularly unordinary experiences.
