My Thoughts

There's something wonderfully engaging about the way Word Up! plays with language. From bold, energetic sound words to softer, more thoughtful moments, the rhythm of the text invites children to not just hear the words-but feel them. It's the kind of book that naturally lends itself to reading aloud, where tone, pacing, and expression become part of the experience.

What stood out most to me is how gently the story introduces an important idea: words carry weight. Without feeling heavy or instructional, it shows how what we say can lift someone up or bring them down. That balance-playful on the surface, meaningful underneath-is what makes this book especially effective for younger readers.

I also appreciated how it leaves space for conversation. This isn't a book that rushes to explain everything. Instead, it opens the door for parents, grandparents, and teachers to pause and ask, "What do you think that word felt like?" or "How could we say that differently?" Those small moments can lead to some very meaningful discussions.

For families and classrooms looking to support social-emotional learning in a natural, approachable way, Word Up! offers a simple but powerful reminder: the words we choose matter-and sometimes, even silence can be kind.

A Note from the Author

I always enjoy the opportunity to hear directly from the author-especially with books like Word Up!, where language and intention play such an important role. Raven Howell shares a few thoughts on the inspiration behind her work and the power of words in a child's world.

YOU SAID, WHAT?!

Have you ever wondered why some books leave you feeling sad, while others leave you thoughtful-or even uplifted? You might think your reaction is simply based on what happens in the plot, but there's much more to language and words than you might imagine.

As a full-time writer, kid lit journalist, and children's author for over 30 years, I spend much of my time in classrooms and with children of all ages at literary and youth events.

Language impacts us starting from day one. For preschoolers, learning words builds the foundation for communication, cognitive development, and social-emotional skills. As children hear and gather more words, they gain the ability to express their thoughts, emotions, and ideas. Naturally, this improves their social interactions with both peers and adults.

While writing my new picture book, Word Up!, I intentionally chose a mix of familiar and less familiar words for readers ages 3-8. Familiar words help move the story forward and give young readers a sense of confidence and achievement. Less familiar words are used sparingly-not to frustrate, but to spark curiosity. These words invite children to enjoy the sound and rhythm of language, especially when read aloud, and are supported by engaging illustrations for younger readers.

When writing for adults, a similar concept applies, but in a more sophisticated way. Most adults already recognize that words influence our moods. It's easy to see why you might choose a light summer read or an inspirational biography. Positive words-those rooted in gratitude, love, encouragement, or success-activate the brain's reward centers and boost mood. In contrast, negative words can trigger the brain's stress response, releasing hormones like cortisol.

Happy words often lead to happier moods. Uplifting stories can offer emotional escape, a positive distraction, and even trigger endorphins. At times, these stories act like mirrors to our own experiences. Reading allows us to live vicariously through characters, and in doing so, it can create a calming, almost meditative state.

Words truly make a difference. So what about reading a thriller or horror story? Notice how you interpret your own reactions. Do you label a rapid heartbeat as excitement-or fear? Through cognitive processing, the language we use-even internally-shapes how we interpret physical sensations and regulate our emotions. In that sense, you're behind the wheel, steering your way through the story.

One of the most fascinating discoveries I encountered while writing Word Up! relates to neural structuring. Regularly using positive language can actually influence the brain's structure, strengthening pathways that make optimistic thinking more natural over time. That's one powerful reason to choose kindness and lead with love each day.
